How do I reference an AI chat or other AI-generated content when there is no shareable link?
Answer
If you would like to cite information generated by an AI tool and provide the reader with the chat transcript, but the tool does not offer a shareable URL, you can include the transcript in the appendix. In the reference list, use the standard format outlined in "Referencing AI tools generally".
See the example below to see how to include it within your assessment.
In-text citation
When prompted with "explain the concept of identity in postmodernism", ChatGPT generated text indicating that "in postmodernism, identity is not seen as fixed, singular, or stable, but rather as fluid, fragmented, and socially constructed" (OpenAI, 2025; see Appendix A for the full transcript).

Appendix (or Appendices if more than one)

General rules for appendices
- Begin each appendix on a separate page at the end of the paper (after the list of references).
- Label: Write the appendix label at the top of the page in bold and centred.
- When there is only one appendix, use the label "Appendix."
- When there are multiple appendices, use the label "Appendix" plus a capital letter (e.g., "Appendix A", "Appendix B")
- Title: Write the appendix title on the next line after the appendix label in bold and centred. Ensure the title describes the content of the appendix.
- Content: After the appendix label and title, present the content of your appendix. Double-space all text, and ensure any citations in the appendix appear in the main reference list for the paper.
- Ensure all page numbers appear on every page at the top right corner, including all pages of an appendix.
