What is OpenAthens?

Why has the library changed the authentication method?

How do I access library online resources via OpenAthens?

What does the system change mean for me?

Answer

What is OpenAthens?

OpenAthens is an authentication method that provides a more secure and effective way to access library's licensed online resources. OpenAthens replaced the EZproxy authentication system in January 2024.

Why are we using OpenAthens?

OpenAthens enables secure and more reliable access to information resources both on and off campus with just one set of login details.

The new system increases the amount of login access points, making it easier to discover and access SAE Library subscribed content.

Previously, to access resources, staff and students would need to navigate to a library created link e.g. via the library website or campus online, whereas with OpenAthens you can access content we subscribe to straight from the publishers' website. Please note, we don't subscribe to everything on the publishers' websites, but when we do, you'll be directed to the resource upon login.

How do I sign in to access library resources with OpenAthens?

See the login options for different SAE campuses and when signing in from within different systems.

If you have already signed in (e.g. through Campus online or by accessing a resource via the Library Catalogue), you will not need to log in again. However, if you change browsers or devices, you will be prompted to log in again. You can access electronic resources for 8 hours as part of your session.

What are the different ways of accessing resources with OpenAthens?

Staff and students can still sign in to library resources via the following options:

  • directly through a database (e.g., ProQuest),
  • via a library system (e.g. the Library Website); and
  • via a prefixed link from within a learning and teaching system, e.g. Campus online

In addition to these options, staff and students can now discover resources and login:

What the system change means for you:

  • If you are a Faculty member, you must create new OpenAthens links to library resources in SAE systems such as Moodle or Google sites by converting the old EZproxy links to OpenAthens links. See information on how to update the links here.

IMPORTANT: Bookmarked links and the links in course materials that include the previous proxy information (saeezproxy.idm.oclc.org) are no longer working.

SAE Library staff are available to answer any questions you may have and can also help you update links in your units if you require. Please contact library@sae.edu.au for assistance.
